Viceroy of Playa del Carmen - Home Away from Home

There is nothing more self rejuvenation than to just pack your lightest clothes and disappear to a secluded oasis with absolutely nothing to do or worry about for an entire 12 days. We just wanted to get away, recharge, and the only place that came to mind with less than a four hour flight from Bogota is a hidden gem called Viceroy Riviera Maya. The place is not new to us having been there a few years back when it was under a different name, Ikal del Mar. We don't usually revisit the same place twice but this was an exception on so many different levels. The hotel is less than a 45 minute drive from Cancun airport and it situates on the best part of the beach in Playa del Carmen.

The place itself is luxurious, extremely private, and we love their pets friendly policy. The only downside is that children are not allowed unless they are at least sixteen years of age as it is designed for adults only. Guests have their individual villas that come with a private pool, all hidden behind luscious greenery. There are beach front villas but the issue here is privacy but your room is only a stone throw away from the beach. Personally, I much prefer the hidden away villas as it is not a long walk to the beach but the walk itself is quite beautiful and tranquil. __________________________________________________________________________________ Individual villa

Service is one of the best, if not, the best that we have experienced from all our travels. One hotel server in particular, Pepe, was exceptional who made our stay even more pampered with his meticulous attention to every detail. Guests are known by names and there are butlers on hands to accommodate and arrange anything from excursions to specific food or room requests. We spent our days lounging on the beautiful white sand beach with the occasional dips in the ocean view pool. It was paradise in its simplest and tranquil state.

We did venture out one evening to the town centre and to be honest, it was a disappointment. It is a typical tourists trap with lots of souvenir shops, sports bars and restaurants. While dinner at La Casa del Agua was excellent with a table overlooking the main town centre, we missed dining at the hotel. There are two restaurants on site, the formal La Marea features Mexican food with Mediterranean influences while the casual Coral Grill offers Al Fresco cuisines. For us, we much prefer the latter both for its wider selection of foods as well as it being right next to the beach.

But all good things must come to an end and the beautiful memories are those that we will always have with us. It is a very special place not only because of its obvious beauty and tranquility but it was the great people and attention to details that made Viceroy a unique place. We felt rejuvenated and ready to come back to the real world with a renewed vision. Well, lets hope that lasts for a while…

Nosotros simplemente queríamos escapar, recargar baterías, y el único lugar que se nos ocurrió, con menos de 4 horas de vuelo desde Bogotá, fue esta gema escondida llamada Viceroy Rivera Maya. El lugar no es nuevo para nosotros pues estuvimos allá unos años atrás cuando se llamaba Ikal del Mar. Generalmente no visitamos un lugar dos veces pero éste era la excepción por muchas razones. El hotel está a 45 minutos en carro desde el aeropuerto deCancún y queda en la mejor parte de la playa en Playa del Carmen.

El lugar es en sí mismo lujoso y extremadamente privado y nos encanta que se permitan mascotas. El único lado negativo es que no se permiten niños que sean menores de 16 años ya que esta diseñado solo para adultos. Los huéspedes cuentan con su propias Villas y piscina privada que además se oculta detrás de la exuberante vegetación. Hay villas al frente de la playa pero el problema con estas es la privacidad pero su habitación esta a un paso de la playa. Personalmente yo prefiero las Villas más escondidas puesto que no hay que caminar mucho y además la caminata es hermosa y tranquila. ________________________________________________________________________________ Villa individual

Camino a la playa

El servicio es uno de los mejores, si no el mejor que hayamos experimentado en todos nuestros viajes. Y en particular un camarero del hotel. Pepe, fue excepcional e hizo que nuestra estadía fuera aún más mimada con la meticulosa atención que prestó a cada detalle. Los huéspedes son tratados por sus nombres, y siempre hay mayordomos disponibles para acomodar y organizar todo, desde excursiones, hasta comida específica o solicitudes de las habitaciones. Nosotros pasamos nuestros días descansando en la hermosa playa de arena blanca con ingresos ocasionales en la piscina con vista al mar. Fue el paraíso en su estado más simple y tranquilo.

Nos aventuramos una noche al centro de la ciudad y para ser honesta, fue una decepción. Es la típica trampa a los turistas con una cantidad de tiendas de souvenirs, bares deportivos y restaurantes. Por el contrario la cena en La Casa del Agua fue excelente, una mesa con vista alcentro de la ciudad, aunque nos perdimos la cena en el hotel. Hay dos restaurantes, el formal La Marea, que ofrece comida Mexicana con influencias mediterráneas y el casual Coral Grill, que ofrece cocina al aire libre. Nosotros preferimos este último tanto por su amplia selección de alimentos, porque es justo al lado de la playa.

Durante nuestra estadía nos reunimos con la chef Ana Cruz, que estaba más que feliz de poneralgunos de nuestros platos favoritos de comida mexica, incluyendo estos deliciosos tacos de pollocon piña a la parrilla.

Pero como todas las cosas buenas deben llegar a su fin, son los recuerdos hermosos los que siempre nos llevaremos. Es un lugar muy especial no solo por su evidente belleza y tranquilidad,si no por las personas maravillosas y la atención a los detalles que hacen que Viceroy sea un lugar único. Nos sentimos rejuvenecidos y listos para regresar al mundo real con una visión renovada. Bueno, esperemos que dure un tiempo…
