Olga Piedrahita - A Visionary

Since we moved here nine months ago, I have heard many wonderful tales about an exceptionally creative and talented Colombian designer, Olga Piedrahita, but I have not had a chance to visit her boutique until recently. Unlike many first time visits to new places, this one in particular, will forever embedded in my memory. From the moment I entered the bright and spacious layout of the shop, I was immediately transformed and allured toward a force of energy that can only be described as entrancing. It is a very unique and inspirational place influenced by nature and grace with beautiful clothes. An art gallery of some form with different shapes and arrangements of the designer's vision, all communicating her love and passion for art. Hence, the true spirit that impel this article is the fascinating story behind the aforementioned creative oasis for nearly 3 decades. ___________________________________________________________________________________ We recently had the pleasure of speaking with the designer and her talented daughter, Danielle, to learn more about the inspirations and passion behind the exquisite one of a kind creations. Originally from Medellin, Olga Piedrahita always carried with her a passion for art that started when she was very young. And it was through her classical ballet studies where she developed an appreciation of movement, the body, and music that eventually led her to a journey of fashion designs. The journey started in her hometown of Medellin in 1982 where she first introduced the "Taller Barroco" concept. According to Olga, this is a concept in search of stories in textures, antique and everyday materials. And after experimenting with the different forms of this concept, the transformation would result into wearable art pieces. Four years after the concept was introduced in Medellin, the designer moved to Bogota in 1986 to continue her "Taller Barroco" vision. Fast forward to the present time, the shop has since became Olga's office and workshop as well as the beautiful boutique we come to admire so profoundly. It is quite astonishing how a place that has been around for 28 years is able to exude a continuum aura of freshness, creativity, and progressive thinking. Resonating the designer's ever changing transformation with her creativity, the shop itself is a reflection of such changes. If you have been there before and upon your return, chances are it will not look the same to you. The layout itself serves as a blank canvas behind the evolving concept through the designer's vision and her own intuition. And as Olga said, "I convert my intuition into a poetic shop surrounding it with music." And as exactly as how she has described, my first encounter with the shop was not just about the clothes but more about the journey. Somehow, she has an ability to take us through on a journey not with words but by invoking something in our minds. We began to see and feel things differently, reaching deep within our own inner intuition and actually seeing these objects as not for what they are, but what they have become. Always staying true to her original creative roots, Olga is constantly experimenting with different materials. They can be in the form of plastics, paper, and whichever one can stitch into a garment. Her source of inspirations are daily, from not what she sees but more importantly, how she sees them. According to Danielle, there are three types of designers. Those that follow trends, those that make trends, and those that invent trends. Her mother is a designer that creates trends. She is constantly working and researching with different materials all the while continuing to surprise her loyal clients and staying well ahead of the competition with her creativity. Unlike many designers, Olga does not create seasonal collections, mainly due to the weather here in Bogota, which is nonseasonal. Instead, she creates one of a kind designs for those who aspire to wear art pieces. And with each piece, it is most likely that there will be a fascinating story behind the collectible and wearable garment. These collections are intricate, thought provoking, and absolutely brilliant. There is always a common theme of nature that play a significant part in the designs and shapes of the garment. Nature is the most powerful form of inspiration and sometimes, we tend to forget how much it has given us throughout the many generations that lived before us and will continue to do so many more after. These are not just fashion designs but they are the acknowledgement to Mother Nature in its purest and most humble form. In addition to her own incredible designs, work by 24 to 27 emerging designers from Colombia are also being featured in the Atelier shop. Olga believes that there are "lots of seeds in Colombian creativity" and Danielle is equally passionate about discovering these new talents and featuring them alongside her mother's work. Similar to the brand's vision, these have not been designed for a specific person, but rather, they are the end products of inspirations that came from everywhere. It is not only about how the designers feel at the time, but also from what they see before them. The end results are breathtaking, unique and unlike any I have seen before. We left the meeting feeling exhilarated as if we too, can create something extraordinary out of the ordinary. Olga has somehow ignited a sense of imaginativeness and inventiveness in the very depth of our unknown consciousness that we too, can do anything if we put our mind and passion to it. It is a form of inspiration that one can only hope to experience at least once in their lifetime.

A diferencia de muchas primeras impresiones de nuevos lugares, esta en particular, quedará para siempre en mi memoria. Desde el momento en que entré en la amplia e iluminada tienda, me transformé y deje seducir por una energía que solo puede ser descrita como fascinante. Es un lugar muy singular e inspirador influenciado por la naturaleza y la gracia de las hermosas prendas. De alguna forma es una galería de arte con diferentes formas y maneras de disponer la visión de la diseñadora, que transmite su amor y pasión por el arte. Por lo tanto, el verdadero espíritu que impulsa este artículo es la fascinante historia detrás del oasis creativo de casi 3 décadas. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Recientemente tuvimos el placer de hablar con la diseñadora y su talentosa hija, Danielle, para aprender más acerca de las fuentes de inspiración y la pasión detrás de las únicas y exquisitas creaciones. Originaria de Medellín, a Olga Piedrahita siempre le ha apasionado el arte que inició desde muy joven. Y fue a través de sus estudios de ballet clásico donde desarrolló una apreciación del movimiento, el cuerpo, y la música que finalmente la llevó al diseño de modas. El viaje comenzó en su ciudad natal, Medellín en 1982, donde introdujo por primera vez el concepto de "Taller Barroco". De acuerdo con Olga, este es un concepto en busca de historias en las texturas, los materiales antiguos y cotidianos. Y después de experimentar con las diferentes formas de este concepto, la transformación resulta en obras de arte para vestir. Cuatro años después de que el concepto fue introducido en Medellín, la diseñadora se trasladó a Bogotá en 1986 para continuar con su visión "Taller Barroco". Un avance rápido hasta el momento actual, la tienda se ha convertido desde la oficina y taller de Olga, hasta una hermosa boutique que podemos admirar profundamente. Es bastante asombroso cómo un lugar que ha existido durante 28 años es capaz de exudar un aura continua de frescura, creatividad y el pensamiento progresista. La tienda es un reflejo de los cambios contantes y transformación de la diseñadora. Si ya ha estado allí, pocas serán las probabilidades de que la tienda sea la misma cuando regrese. El diseño en sí sirve como lienzo en blanco detrás del concepto que evoluciona a través de la visión de la diseñadora y su propia intuición. Y como dijo Olga, "Convierto mi intuición en una tienda poética rodeada de música." Y más exactamente como lo describió ella, mi primer encuentro con la tienda no fue solo acerca de ropa sino más acerca de un viaje. De alguna manera, ella tiene una habilidad para llevarnos a través de un viaje, no con palabras, sino mediante la invocación de algo en nuestras mentes. Empezamos a ver y sentir las cosas de manera diferente, llegando a lo profundo de nuestra intuición y empezamos a apreciar estos objetos no como lo que son, sino en lo que se han convertido. Siempre se mantiene fiel a sus raíces creativas, Olga está experimentando constantemente con diferentes materiales. Puede ser plástico, papel, y cualquiera de ellos puede coserse en una prenda de vestir. Su fuente de inspiración es, no de lo que ve, sino más importante aun, de cómo lo ve. Según Danielle, hay tres tipos de diseñadores. Los que siguen las tendencias, los que marcan tendencia, y los que idean las tendencias. Su madre es una diseñadora que idea las tendencias. Ella está constantemente trabajando e investigando con diferentes materiales, mientras continua sorprendiendo a sus fieles clientes y manteniéndose un paso adelante de la competencia con su creatividad. A diferencia de muchos diseñadores, Olga no crea colecciones de temporada, principalmente debido a que el clima aquí en Bogotá, no es estacional. En cambio, crea una pieza de cada diseño para aquellos que anhelan vestir obras de arte. Y lo más probable es que detrás de una de estas prendas coleccionables, habrá una fascinante historia. Estas colecciones son intrincadas, provocadoras, y absolutamente brillantes. Siempre hay un tema común de la naturaleza que juega un papel importante en los diseños y formas de la prenda. La naturaleza es la forma más poderosa de inspiración y, a veces, tendemos a olvidar lo mucho que nos ha dado a lo largo de las muchas generaciones que vivieron antes que nosotros y que continuarán haciéndolo las generaciones que vienen. Estos no son sólo diseños de moda, sino que son el reconocimiento a la madre naturaleza en su forma más pura y fiel. Además de sus increíbles diseños, trabaja con entre 24 a 27 diseñadores emergentes de Colombia que también se encuentran disponibles en la tienda. Olga cree que hay "un montón de semillas en la creatividad colombiana" y Danielle es igual de apasionada por descubrir estos nuevos talentos junto con el trabajo de su madre. Al igual que la visión de la marca, estos no han sido diseñados para una persona específica, sino más bien, son el resultado de la inspiración que viene de todas partes. No se trata solo de cómo los diseñadores se sienten en el momento, sino más bien de lo que ven más allá de eso. El resultado final es impresionante, único y diferente a cualquier cosa que haya visto antes. Salimos de la reunión sintiéndonos eufóricas como si nosotras también pudiéramos crear algo extraordinario y fuera de lo común. Olga ha encendido, de alguna manera, una sensación de imaginación e inventiva en lo más profundo de nuestra conciencia desconocida que nos invita a hacer cualquier cosa si ponemos nuestra mente y pasión. Es una forma de inspiración que uno esperaría experimentar al menos una vez en la vida.
