From Charming Cusco to Sirenic Machu Picchu and Back…

We all have a list of places we wish to visit someday. Mine has always been Machu Picchu and since it is merely a stone throw away from Colombia, we finally had a chance to visit this new Wonder of the World several weeks ago. Our journey started in Cusco, Peru, where we stayed at the Marriott Hotel in the heart of the city's historical centre. This is the best way to thoroughly enjoy both Cusco and Machu Picchu as the distance between the two places are only several hours by bus and train. Those we knew who have visited both places all recommended that we stay in Cusco while spend a day up in Machu Picchu. __________________________________________________________________________________ Sky View of Scenic Cusco

Cusco is a very small town with approximately 600,000 people and the altitude is quite high, close to 12,000 feet above sea level. Therefore, it is essential to stay hydrate at all times and I would recommend drinking a well known herbal infusion tea known as 'coca tea' to help combat the high altitude.

For those of you who are familiar with Cartagena, Colombia, it is a place quite similar to it. The town centre is very quaint and the best way to properly explore is to walk around. As more than 90 percent of the city's income is dependent on tourism, the options are quite vast and can be quite confusing. However, we chose to go with the Free Tour provided by the City. The meeting point for this tour is around 11:30AM at a park across the street from the famous Chocolate Museum near Calle Santa Clara. The three part English speaking tour lasted for two hours that included the city's history, culture and food. Overall, it was a lovely tour with plenty of time to enjoy the scenery as well as wonderful photo opportunities.

For me, the best part about this walking tour was the colourful architectures of this small town. Bright and happy colours were radiating from every little corners of unexpected turns. From walking down a main road to a narrow quiet street that seemed as though life doesn't exist but somehow, captivating structures just appeared out of nowhere that bring forth a whole different meaning to the purpose of the tour. So, always have your camera ready and don't forget to pause and take in the surroundings because there are many surprises await.

After two days in Cusco, we decided to spend an entire day in Machu Picchu. Tickets must be purchased in advance and I would recommend you do this prior to arriving in Peru as well as bringing your passport along with you to the tour. The journey started with an early bus ride at 6:30 AM from Cusco to Ollantaytambo Train Station. The 90 minute bus ride would take you through Cusco where the scenery was a bit underwhelming until we got closer to the station.

Once arrived in Ollantaytambo, we boarded the train operated by Peru Rail where another 2 1/2 hour train ride would take us closer to Machu Picchu. The train ride was comfortable, fun, and through a beautiful scenic route.

As we pulled in to the town centre called Aguas Calientes, the last part of the journey is to board a bus that would ultimately takes you up to Machu Picchu. Bus tickets can be purchased once you arrive that morning and the last part of this journey is about another 30 minutes. The ride was quite entertaining going uphill through winding roads with amazing views of the mountain. So after what seemed like a journey through time, we finally arrived at our final destination. But before you begin the tour of Machu Picchu, I would highly recommend that you hire one of the guides who presented themselves once you pass security. Every day, more than 2,000 visitors come to the sacred site and it is a very big place with lots of winding paths. Without a guide, once can easily get lost in the maze and perhaps miss out on an educational part of this wonderful experience. Our first sight of Machu Picchu was unforgettable and full of tranquility. Photos alone cannot express a deep sense of mystical and the view was just magnificent.

We were told that it was the best time of the year to visit both places. As it turned out, it was a very warm day up in the mountain and our 2 hour educational tour was just the right amount of time spent for our first visit. There are many tour options from several hours to several days trekking through Machu Picchu but for us, this was the perfect introduction to this vast area of mystical attraction. Nevertheless, this is certainly not the last time as we plan to come back for a longer stay next time. It is a place with many wonderful mysteries and it is one of those experiences that will stay with you long after it was over.

Esta es la mejor manera de disfrutar a fondo tanto de Cusco como de Machu Picchu teniendo en cuenta que la distancia entre estos dos lugares es de tan solo algunas horas en autobús y en tren. Cusco es una ciudad muy pequeña, con aproximadamente 600.000 personas y la altitud es bastante alta, alrededor de 12.000 pies sobre el nivel del mar. Por lo cual, es esencial mantenerse hidratado en todo momento y yo recomendaría beber un té de infusión de hierbas bastante conocido llamado “Te de coca”, para ayudar a combatir la elevada altitud.

Para aquellos de ustedes que están familiarizados con Cartagena en Colombia, Cusco es un lugar bastante similar a ésta. El centro de la ciudad es muy pintoresco y la mejor manera de explorar fielmente la ciudad es caminando o paseando. Dado que más del 90 por ciento de los ingresos de la ciudad dependen del turismo, las opciones son bastante amplias, tanto que puede llegar a ser muy confuso. Sin embargo, optamos por el tour gratuito proporcionado por la ciudad. El punto de encuentro para este tour fue a las 11:30 am en un parque pasando la calle del famoso Museo del Chocolate cerca a la calle Santa Clara. La charla en Ingles se prolongó por dos horas y se dividió en tres partes, la historia, cultura y gastronomía de la ciudad. En general, fue un viaje encantador con un montón de tiempo para disfrutar del paisaje, así como excelentes oportunidades para tomar fotos.

Para mí, la mejor parte de este recorrido a pie fue la arquitectura de colores de esta pequeña ciudad. Los colores brillantes y alegres llenaron de brillo cada rincón de esos giros inesperados. Desde las calles principales hasta las estrechas callecitas en donde parecía que la vida no existiera pero de alguna manera, las estructuras cautivantes que acababan de aparecer de la nada le daban un significado completamente diferente al sentido de este tour. Por lo tanto, siempre tenga su cámara lista y no se olvide de hacer una pausa y disfrutar de los alrededores, porque hay muchas sorpresas esperando.

Después de dos días en Cusco, decidimos pasar un día entero en Machu Picchu. Los boletos deben comprarse con antelación y yo recomendaría hacer esto antes de llegar a Perú, así como cargar el pasaporte con uno durante el Tour. El recorrido comenzó con un viaje en autobús a las 6:30 am desde Cusco hasta la estación de tren de Ollantaytambo. El traslado en autobús a través de Cusco tomó 90 minutos, y el paisaje fue un poco decepcionante, hasta que nos acercamos a la estación.

Una vez llegamos a Ollantaytambo, abordamos el tren operado por Peru Rail donde otro viaje en tren de dos horas y media nos llevaría más cerca de Machu Picchu. El viaje en tren fue cómodo, divertido, y a través de hermosos paisajes.

Una vez llegamos al centro de la ciudad a un lugar llamado Aguas Calientes, continuamos con la última parte del viaje que fue a bordo del autobús que finalmente nos llevó a Machu Picchu. Los tiquetes de autobús se pueden comprar allí y este viaje tendrá una duración de 30 minutos más. El trayecto fue bastante entretenido, cuesta arriba a través de carreteras ondulantes, con impresionantes vistas de la montaña. Así que después de lo que parecía un viaje en el tiempo, por fin llegamos a nuestro destino final. Pero antes de empezar el tour de Machu Picchu, yo recomendaría inmensamente contratar a una de las guías que se presentan una vez se cruza el cordón de seguridad. Cada día, más de 2.000 visitantes vienen a este sitio sagrado y es un lugar muy grande con un montón de caminos serpenteantes. Sin una guía, sería muy fácil perderse en los laberintos y por consiguiente desperdiciar la parte educativa de esta maravillosa experiencia. Nuestra primera vista de Machu Picchu fue inolvidable y llena de tranquilidad. Las fotos por sí solas no pueden expresar el profundo sentido místico y el paisaje era simplemente magnífico.

Nos dijeron que era la mejor época del año para visitar ambos lugares. Al final resultó un día bastante cálido arriba en la montaña y nuestro viaje educativo de dos horas fue la cantidad justa de tiempo para una primera visita. Hay muchas opciones de tures desde varias horas hasta varios días, pero para nosotros, este fue la introducción perfecta a esta amplia zona de atracción mística. Sin embargo, esta no será la última vez pues tenemos la intención de volver para una estadía más larga. Es un lugar con muchos misterios maravillosos y es una de esas experiencias que se quedará con ustedes por mucho tiempo.
