Catalina Ortiz Posada - Artist

Everyone has an appreciation for art but how often and what happens when we can identify ourselves with a specific piece of work or artist? It was during one of my visits to an exhibition hosted by Galeria el Museo of Bogota that I came across the most fascinating work by a Colombian Artist, Catalina Ortiz Posada, that forever sealed my view about life and coincidences. The Exhibition was called LOS DIARIOS DEL I CHING or Diaries of the I Ching. Like many of you out there, the I Ching Book is quite a new discovery for me but it is an ancient divination text and the oldest of the Chinese classics with the first Western translation dated back to the early 1700s. As I come to find out during my own research of the book itself, it is indeed very intriguing and so much so that it has been a subject of hot debate as well as inspirations within the world of literature, religion, business, and in this case, art. The theories are complex and would consider a great amount of time to understand. For the artist, it took Catalina two years and 24 intricate art pieces later, that she finally no longer feel that she is lost, mainly thanks to her work and the exhibition that followed thereafter. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Things didn't always turn out the way Catalina has envisioned when she first started out. She attended Los Andes University here in Bogota where she began as a Psychology major. Soon after Catalina arrived at the School of Psychology that she found herself wandered into the Art Department where everything changed from that moment on. It was an instant feeling according to the artist but Catalina was afraid that she did not possess the talent to pursue art. But eventually, through the understanding that art is a form of expressive execution that has to be learned that she decided to pursue this new chapter of her life. But she never left Psychology and indeed produced a final thesis that was based on both concepts where she conducted a series of male analysis based on their own individual living style. More or less, it was a profiling book, beautifully hand made psychoanalysing her male subjects by putting them in a "perfect" scenario and breaking them down in order to see what was behind the mask. It was simple psychology but perhaps it was too different that her professor did not understand at the time, much to the artist's disappointment. ___________________________________________________________________________________ The I Ching came about later in Catalina's career when a friend who has lived in the Colombian jungle for many years has used it as a form of meditation lend her the book. Since then, it has become part of Catalina, her life and work. What started out as an automatic unconscious switch from taking notes while reading this complex book, to sketching and private drawings for her own understanding is now the compilation of this exhibition. According to the artist, "one must not try to understand the I Ching from your head, but from your heart. It is an inner journey of understanding the book, like a psychological map of yourself." It is a condensed force of energy between the book and her as it was the first time that she no longer feel lost, sad or disappointed. But make no mistake that Catalina is a struggling artist because she is not. Quite the opposite that she is one of the happiest, most endearing person I have ever met. Her energy is positively contagious and she is filled with hopes and dreams. Take a closer look at Catalina's exhibition and you will see the beautiful vision reinterpreted in delicate details surrounded by delightful textures and colours. There is a sense that the artist is in a good place of her life and my connection to her work from a viewer's perspective was quite strong for which I rarely experience at these type of exhibitions.

There is so much judgement in our society that it would be easier to just follow the crowd than to stand out as an individual. We have all been through this vicious cycle and Catalina is no exception. She experienced very early on in her career that women have to be high achievers, aggressive or a feminist in order to be successful. The environment for which she experienced was "very competitive, ambitious, and all about being visible." Catalina was not intimidated but she did feel overwhelmed by it all. Nevertheless, it helped Catalina look at the art world in a different way and decided to "simplify" her own work. And one can expressively see this in her detailed yet simple art. The pieces are fluid, ethereal, and very personal. Here, the artist opened herself up by showing us different parts of her life and the profound experiences she has lived. Fue durante una de mis visitas a una exposición presentada por la Galería el Museo de Bogotá, que me encontré con el trabajo más fascinante de una Artista Colombiana, Catalina Ortiz Posada, que se selló para siempre mi visión acerca de la vida y las coincidencias. La Exposición se llama Los Diarios del I Ching. Como para muchos de ustedes, para mí el Libro del I Ching es un descubrimiento nuevo pero se trata de un texto antiguo de adivinación así como el más antiguo de los clásicos chinos, su primera traducción Occidental data de principios de 1700. Como averigüé durante mi investigación del libro, es verdaderamente fascinante, tanto que ha sido el objeto de acalorados debates así como inspiración en el mundo de la literatura, religión, negocios, y en este caso, en el mundo del arte. Las teorías son complejas y requieren una gran cantidad de tiempo para entenderías. En cuanto a la artista, le tomó a Catalina dos años y 24 piezas intrincadas de arte para sentir finalmente que no estaba perdida, principalmente gracias a su trabajo y a la exposición que le siguió. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Las cosas no salieron siempre de la manera como Catalina las había previsto cuando empezó. Ella estudiaba en la Universidad de Los Andes aquí en Bogotá donde empezó su carrera de Psicología. Después de llegar a la Facultad de Psicología, se encontró caminando por el Departamento de Arte donde desde ese momento todo cambió. De acuerdo a la artista, fue un sentimiento instantáneo pero Catalina temía no poseer el talento necesario para seguir una carrera artística. Eventualmente, a través de la comprensión de que el arte es una forma de ejecución expresiva que tiene que aprenderse, se decidió a seguir este nuevo capítulo de su vida. Pero nunca dejó la Psicología y presentó una tesis final basada en ambos conceptos donde condujo una serie de análisis masculinos basados en su propio estilo de vida individual. Más o menos, fue un libro de perfiles, hecho bellamente a mano psicoanalizando a sus sujetos masculinos poniéndolos en el escenario "perfecto" y descomponiéndolos para ver que había detrás de la máscara. Era psicología simple pero calvez demasiado diferente tanto que su profesor no lo entendió en ese momento, para decepción de la artista. ___________________________________________________________________________________ El I Ching llegó más tarde en la carrera de Catalina cuando un amigo que había vivido en la selva colombiana por muchos años y lo usaba como forma de meditación, le prestó el libro. Desde entonces, ha llegado a ser parte de Catalina, su vida y su trabajo. Lo que empezó como un cambio inconsciente automático que pasó de tomar notas a hacer esbozos y dibujos en privado para su propia comprensión, es ahora el conjunto de su exposición. De acuerdo a la artista "uno no debe tratar de entender el I Ching con la cabeza, sino con el corazón. Es un viaje interno de entendimiento del libro, como un mapa psicológico de uno mismo." Hay una fuerza condensada de energía entre el libro y ella y fue la primera vez que se sintió no estar perdida, triste o decepcionada. Pero no se debe pensar que Catalina es una artista torturada porque ella no lo es. Totalmente lo opuesto, ella es una de las personas más felices y cautivantes que he conocido jamás. Su energía es positivamente contagiosa y está llena de esperanzas y sueños. Al mirar más de cerca al exposición de Catalina se verá una bella visión reinterpretada en detalles delicados rodeados por texturas y colores encantadores. Hay una sensación de que la artista está en un buen lugar en su vida y mi conexión con su trabajo desde la perspectiva del observador fue bastante fuerte lo que raramente experimento en este tipo de exposiciones.

Se juzga tanto en nuestra sociedad que sería más fácil sólo seguir a la multitud que destacarse como individuo. Todos hemos estado en este círculo vicioso y Catalina no es la excepción. Ella experimentó muy pronto en su carrera el que las mujeres tienen que ser triunfadoras, agresivas o feministas para ser exitosas. El ambiente que experimentó fue "muy competitivo, ambicioso, todo acerca de hacerse visible." Catalina no se intimidó pero se sentía abrumada por todo esto. Sin embargo, esto le ayudó a ver el mundo del arte de una manera diferente y decidió "simplificar" su propio trabajo. Y esto se puede ver expresado en su arte detallado pero simple. Las piezas son fluidas, etéreas y muy personales. Aquí, el artista se abrió mostrándonos diferentes partes de su vida y las profundas experiencias que ha vivido. LENERDPROJECT - The Next Generation Designer

Before I came to live here, I used to visit Colombia and immediately fell in love with everything around me. Bogota, in particular, is a beautiful city with so many wonderful and beautiful people. And with every visit thereafter, I fell in love more and more with the culture and vibrancy of the place. I love everything Bogota has to offer and more so, the ever-changing face of fashion that seems to be emerging everywhere you look. And as a fashion blogger during this exciting time, it could only allow me to meet many wonderful talents and hear all about their stories. So, it was not very long ago that I came across a very young and inspiring designer, Felipe Santamaría, of L E N E R D Project. At a tender age of only 24, Felipe has an amazing understanding of timeless fashion. The beautiful pieces that he has created have an aura of purity, simplicity, and of course, everlasting. ___________________________________________________________________________________ I recently sat down with Felipe as we leisurely chatted more about his fashion journey and where he thinks his inspirations will take him next. A graduate from Escuela de Diseño y Mercadeo de Moda Arturo Tejada Cano, Felipe first job right out of design school was quite impressive as he landed an internship with a very well known Colombian designer, Hernan Zajar. He worked there for three years and became their Chief Designer. Felipe left the House of Zajar in March of 2014 to be the Creative Director for SFILER, another fashion company here in Colombia. But going back to his time at Hernan Zajar, I had to ask about how he felt working for a designer who is well known for his use of bold, vibrant colours and designs which I think is a complete opposite of a less is More approach by Lenerd Project. And according to Felipe, it was the very sense of Hernan's colourful creativity that taught him about designing and creating. So, while at SFILER, Felipe decided to enter the very first design competition known as Hilando Talentos presented at the CaliExposhow of Colombia in 2014 where he was the winner. True to his passion for luxurious textures and minimalist approach, the collection was modern, wearable yet timeless. The pieces were understated elegance perfect for a strong and confident woman who knows that she doesn't need the clothes to represent who she is but on the contrary, what HER style says about her. It is a difficult task to create when the clothes are so simple but in my opinion, Felipe achieved it brilliantly. It was a well thought out collection given that he had only two weeks to design and create. Below are some of the winning looks from Felipe's very first collection, MONUMENTO:

MONUMENTO is a collection inspired by Lee Ufan, the famous South Korean artist known for "innovative body of work that revolves around the notion of encounter—seeing the bare existence of what is actually before us and focusing on "the world as it is." And according to Felipe, Lee Ufan's art is where the dialect between two elements in the space creates a powerful conversation. When Felipe created L E N E R D, he wanted to design for a more mature woman, where "a woman wears the clothes, not the clothes that wear the woman." He loves to experiment with textures and each creative design comes with a story but not in an expressive way as much as it is quietly woven into the fabrics or in the contrast of materials. I understood his view completely as fashion should not be about what is current but it should be more about an expression of who we are, regardless of where we are in our lives. And with a growing number of fashion choices available today, some designers are running out of ideas so they started to come up with ridiculous and comical ways to get our attention. Some would become fashion victims and fall into this horrendous wave of fashion trends while others would look for more stable choices. That is where L E N E R D Project comes in. No doubt he is a young designer in such a trying times but somehow, Felipe has not lost his ways. Perhaps it has a lot to do with the enormous support and guidance that he receives from both his Grandmother and Mother. Both strong figures in the family, have shown the designer the way of the world and of course, his own ability to understand the importance of creating something from his heart. ___________________________________________________________________________________ The future is very bright for this young Colombian designer. He is currently working on the next collection and the award winning MONUMENTO pieces can be purchased at The Backroom of Bogota. Some of Felipe's future plans include a show during New York Fashion Week but more importantly, he wants to commit himself to the Colombian fashion industry and create a permanent footing here before venturing outside. I see this as a commitment to the country's ever-growing fashion market and with Felipe's clear vision of a simpler world, who knows where his dreams and passion will take him.

Bogotá, en particular, es una ciudad bella con mucha gente maravillosa y hermosa. Y en cada visita, me enamoraba más y más de la cultura y vitalidad del lugar. Amo todo lo que Colombia tiene para ofrecer y aún más, el constante cambio en el talante de la moda que parece emerger en cualquier lugar en que se mire. El ser una blogger de moda durante este momento tan interesantes me ha permitido conocer talentos maravillosos y escuchar sus historias completas. Así, no tardé mucho en cruzarme con un diseñador muy joven e inspirador, Felipe Santamaría de LENERD Project. A la tierna edad de 24 años, Felipe tiene una comprensión asombrosa de la moda intemporal. Las hermosas piezas que ha creado tienen un aura de pureza, simplicidad y, desde luego, eternidad. _________________________________________________________________________________ Recientemente me senté con Felipe a charlar más acerca de su viaje por la moda y a donde piensa que su inspiración lo llevará próximamente. Graduado de la Escuela de Diseño y Mercadeo de Moda Arturo Tejada Cano, el primer trabajo de Felipe al salir de la escuela de diseño fue sorprendente ya que consiguió una pasantía con el muy conocido diseñador colombiano, Hernán Zajar. Trabajo allí por tres años y llegó a ser el Jefe Diseñador. Felipe dejó la Casa de Zajar en Marzo de 2014 para ser el Director Creativo de SFILER, otra compañía de moda aquí en Colombia. Pero volviendo a su período con Hernán Zajar, tuve que preguntarle acerca de cómo se sentía el trabajar para un diseñador que es bien conocido por su uso de colores y diseños arriesgados y vibrantes lo que considero es lo opuesto totalmente a la aproximación menos es más de LENERD Project. De acuerdo a Felipe, fue ese mismo sentido de creatividad colorida de Hernán lo que le enseñó sobre diseño y creación. Así, al estar en SFILER, Felipe decidió entrar a la primera competencia de diseño conocida como Hilando Talentos presentada en la CaliExposhow de Colombia en el 2014 donde fue el ganador. Fiel a su pasión por texturas lujosas y enfoque minimalista, la colección fue moderna, llevadera y a la vez intemporal. Las piezas eran de discreta elegancia, perfectas para una mujer fuerte y confiada que sabe que no necesita la ropa para representar quién es ella sino que al contrario, lo que SU estilo dice de ella. Es una tarea difícil crear cuando los vestidos son tan sencillos, pero en mi opinión, Felipe lo logró brillantemente. Fue una colección muy bien pensada dado que sólo tuvo dos semanas para diseñar y crear. A continuación hay algunos de los looks ganadores de la primera colección de Felipe, MONUMENTO:

MONUMENTO es una colección inspirada por Lee Ufan, el famoso artista surcoreano conocido por “su cuerpo de trabajo innovador que se desarrolla alrededor de la noción de encuentro – mirar la existencia desnuda de lo que esta realmente ante nosotros y enfocarse en “el mundo como es”. De acuerdo a Felipe, el arte de Lee Ufan es donde la dialéctica entre dos elementos en el espacio crea una conversación poderosa. Cuando Felipe creo LENERD, deseaba diseñar para una mujer más madura, “una mujer que lleva los vestidos, no los vestidos llevan a la mujer”. A él le fascina experimentar con texturas y cada diseño creativo viene con una historia pero no de una manera expresiva sino más bien como tejida serenamente en las telas o en el contraste de los materiales. Entiendo su visión completamente ya que la moda no debería ser sobre lo que es actual sino que debe ser más una expresión de quienes somos, independientemente de donde nos encontremos en nuestras vidas. Y hoy, con un número creciente de opciones de moda disponibles, algunos diseñadores están quedándose sin ideas y han empezado a proponer fórmulas ridículas y cómicas para obtener nuestra atención. Algunos se volverán víctimas de la moda y caerán en esa horrenda ola de tendencias de moda mientras que otros buscaran opciones más estables. Aquí es donde entra LENERD Project. Sin duda es un diseñador joven en tiempos difíciles pero de alguna manera, Felipe no ha perdido su camino. Talvez tiene mucho que ver con el enorme apoyo y guía que recibe de su abuela y mamá. Ambas figuras fuertes en la familia, le han mostrado al diseñador la manera como el mundo es y desde luego, su propia habilidad para entender la importancia de crear algo con el corazón. ___________________________________________________________________________________ El futuro es muy brillante para este joven diseñador colombiano. Actualmente está trabajando en su nueva colección y las piezas de su premiado MONUMENTO pueden adquirirse en The Backroom en Bogota. Algunos de los planes futuros de Felipe incluyen un show durante la New York Fashion Week pero más importante, él quiere comprometerse con la industria de la moda colombiana y crear aquí una base permanente antes de aventurarse en el exterior. Esto lo veo como un compromiso con el mercado siempre creciente de la moda del país y con la visión clara de Felipe de un mundo más simple, quien sabe adónde lo llevaran sus sueños y pasión.
