Cartagena - Old Town Charm and More…

We recently came back from one of my favourite places here in Colombia and I just want to share with you some of the very special moments from this trip. As I have already written about Cartagena in my blog last year (it was my first ever post, as a matter of fact), I decided to keep it simple and let the photos speak for themselves. What is apparently different from the previous post is this time, I went back to an island called Islas del Rosario, an absolute paradise if you ever have a chance to visit. You can go there for a day trip or stay a few nights and completely enjoy one of the most beautiful beaches that nature has to offer. It is only a 45 minutes boat ride from Cartagena and if I may, it was the highlight of my trip. So much so that every time I go back to Cartagena now, a day trip to the island will always be a part of the holiday agenda. ___________________________________________________________________________________ The day began with a magical sunrise and clear sky followed by an unbelievable surreal sunset

Wonders of the Scottish Highlands

All those years living in London, there was never a chance to visit the Scottish Highlands until of course, we moved to Colombia. A typical circumstance but nevertheless, I guess it was worth waiting for. The Highlands, as one would call it, is a historic region of Scotland surrounded by spectacular mountains and rivers. It is known for its natural beauty, charm, Scotch whisky, and last but not least, the Loch Ness Monster sighting myth. Since we were already in London, it was the perfect time and place to start our getaway for a few days. And, whenever there is a chance for a scenic sighting, the best option is always by train (if possible) which in this case, from either London's King's Cross or Euston Station. We decided to leave from Euston Station and it was a lovely overnight journey that lasted about 13 hours. I love to travel by train and the scenery in the early morning hours before we reach Inverness, Scotland, was breathtaking. It was an intriguing experience where more spectacular views were certain to follow thereafter. Once arrived to Inverness and with a pre-booked rental car, we drove for another hour or so to our final destination. And though the drive from Inverness was not very long, which was fine given the fact that the train ride was 13 hours, the route was scenic and so very peaceful.

This is a very small area of Scotland with total population of less than 300,000 so expect to see only the occasional cars but for the most part, this is what it looks like

There are many things to see here in the Highlands but since it was our first visit, we wanted to take our time and explore as much as possible the surrounding area without rushing about to see everything during the four day trip. We stayed at the historic Highland Club located on the southern shores of Loch Ness which by the way, was absolutely breathtaking. The property has been classified as Grade A gothic buildings originated from the 1729 English fortification, Fort Augustus, which were then transformed into St. Benedict's Abbey. Now, it is available for either Holidays rental or Property purchases.

But my favourite view of the property is from The Boat House where in the early morning hours, the most serene and magnificent mist seem to coat the surroundings with its beautiful mystery.

We did not have specific plans during the four day stay, except to explore more of the magnificent scenery by driving to the surrounding towns and visiting some of the distilleries along the way. It was one of the most peaceful, relaxing, and simple holidays I have been on in a very long time. A car is necessary and the most amazing experience come when you loose yourself in the moment and drive wherever your heart takes you. Here are some of my favourite images during our trip:

On our last day when we set out to drive to Edinburg to catch our flight back, we drove past the prettiest place that I only wish I knew earlier, House of Bruar. Located near Bruar Falls or 15 miles north of Pitlochry, it is Scotland's most prestigious independent store encompass an art gallery, food hall, and of course, the most wonderful Scottish cashmere. But in a way, finding it by chance was just another beautiful end to what was already an incredible holiday.

Overall, the best way to describe this trip is that it was an eye opening for me. Yes, we are all surrounded by nature whether we live in the city or out in the country but how often do we stop and truly appreciate Mother Nature as it has been intended to be. We are always running from place to place only to forget to once in a while, pause and appreciate what is around us. This trip has brought me back to the ways things used to be (probably because for the most part, there was hardly any signal out on the road). Therefore, we were naturally forced to pay attention to nature and be one with our surroundings. It was quite liberating once I was used to the silence and of course, when the signal came back on, it was a whole new appreciation for technology. So, there you have it, the trip was a great balance of nature and today's reality. It was a trip I truly enjoy and I am looking forward to returning and exploring more of the Scottish Highlands.

___________________________________________________________________________________ Todos estos años viviendo en Londres y nunca tuvimos la oportunidad de visitar los Highlands escoceses (las Tierras Altas escocesas) hasta que, desde luego, nos mudamos a Colombia. Una situación muy común, pero no obstante, creo que valió la pena esperar. Los Highlands (Tierras Altas), como uno los llamaría, son una región histórica de Escocia rodeada de montañas y ríos espectaculares. Es conocida por su belleza natural, encanto, whisky escoces, y por último, si bien no menos importante, el mito del Monstruo de Loch Ness (Lago Ness). Dado que ya estábamos en Londres, eran el momento y lugar perfectos para empezar nuestro viaje por unospocos días. Y, cuando existe la oportunidad de ver paisajes, la mejor opción es siempre por tren (si es posible) lo cual en este caso significaba partir desde las estaciones de King’s Cross o Euston en Londres. Decidimos salir de la estación de Euston y fue un viaje nocturno encantadorque duro más o menos 13 horas. Yo amo viajar por tren y los paisajes que vimos en la madrugada antes de llegar a Inverness, Escocia, fueron espectaculares. Fue una experiencia fascinante donde las vistas de paisajes aún más espectaculares estaban aún por venir. Una vez llegamos a Invernes y con un automóvil previamente alquilado, manejamos por otra hora más o menos hasta nuestro destino final. Y aunque el viaje desde Inverness no fue muy largo, lo cual fue excelente teniendo en cuenta el hecho de que el viaje en tren duro 13 horas, la ruta estuvo llena de paisajes y fue muy pacífica.

Y aquí está el perfecto compañero de camino

Hay mucho que ver en los Highlands pero dado que era nuestra primera visita, queríamos tomarnos nuestro tiempo y explorar tanto como fuera posible el área circundante sin apresurarnos a ver todo durante el viaje de cuatro días. Estuvimos en el histórico Highland Club(Club Highland) situado en la costa norte del Lago Ness el cual a propósito, es absolutamente asombroso. La propiedad has sido clasificada como un edificio gótico Grado A originado de unafortificación inglesa de 1729, el Fort Augustus ( Fuerte Augusto), el cual fue transformado entonces en la St. Benedict’s Abbey (Abadía San Benedicto). Ahora está disponible para alquiler de vacaciones o para compra.

Pero mi vista favorita de la propiedad es aquella desde The Boat House (la Casa de los Botes) donde en las primeras horas de la mañana, la niebla más serena y magnifica cubre los alrededores con su bello misterio.

No teníamos planes específicos para nuestra estadía de cuatro días excepto explorar más magníficos paisajes manejando hasta los pueblos cercanos y visitando algunas de las destileríasque había en el camino. Fue una de las vacaciones más pacíficas, relajantes y simples que he tenido en un muy largo rato. Es necesario un automóvil y la experiencia más espectacular llega cuando uno se pierde en el momento y maneja hasta donde le corazón le lleve. Aquí están algunas de mis imágenes favoritas del viaje:

En nuestro último día cuando estábamos por empezar el viaje por carro a Edimburgo para tomar nuestro avión de regreso, pasamos por el lugar más bonito que hubiera yo deseado haber visto antes, la House of Bruar (Casa de Bruar). Localizada cerca de Bruar Falls o a 15 millas al norte de Pitlochry, es la más prestigiosa tienda independiente de Escocia, abarcando una galería de arte, plazoleta de comidas y desde luego, el más fabuloso cahsmere escoces. Pero de alguna manera, encontrarlo por casualidad constituyó también un bello final para lo que eran ya unas increíbles vacaciones.

En suma, la mejor manera de describir este viaje es como un viaje que me abrió los ojos. Sí, estamos rodeados de naturaleza sea que vivamos en la ciudad o en el campo pero cuan a menuda hacemos una pausa y apreciamos realmente a la Madre Naturaleza como se merece. Estamos siempre corriendo de un lugar a otro olvidándonos de hacer una pausa de vez en cuando y apreciar los que nos rodea. Este viaje me llevo a la manera como las cosas solían ser (probablemente porque durante la mayor parte, había apenas señal de celular en el camino). Por lo tanto fuimos forzados a prestar atención a la naturaleza y ser uno con los alrededores. Fue bastante liberador una vez que me acostumbre al silencio y desde luego, una vez que la señal regreso, también resultó en una nueva apreciación de la tecnología. Así que ahí lo tienen,el viaje fue un gran balance entre la naturaleza y la realidad de hoy. Fue un viaje que en verdad disfruté y espero volver y explorar más de los Highlands Escoceses.
