Redesign Studio Colombia

Everything happens for a reason and in our case, it was a wonderful reason, indeed. It all started when we decided at the last minute to visit a Fashion and Design Event hosted recently by Verano Suite here in Bogota. Since we are still fairly new here in the city, we did not know what to expect from such an event but with all unexpected occasions, lovely surprises met us at every turn. Young and emerging fashion and accessories designers were present to introduce their collections with fresh enthusiasm. The pieces themselves were beautiful, unique, and full of personality. And as we walked along leisurely admiring the array of colourful displays, one particular section, also known as Redesign Studio Colombia, where cool, retro, and contemporary display of furniture pieces as well as accessories immediately caught our attention. The Founder and Designer behind Redesign Studio, Andrea Mallarino, spoke to us briefly about her design concept of reworking old pieces and giving them new lives. These are items that would normally be thrown away or overlooked but they have been recreated and given new functionalities while still possess the authenticity of their original aesthetic beauty. After speaking to Andrea, I knew we had to write a story about this emerging and very talented designer. The concept can be seen as simple but its impact and creativity are enormous in today's world of excessiveness. ___________________________________________________________________________________ Andrea's journey began at the Universidad Jorge Tadeo Lozano here in Bogota followed by a transfer to The Istituto Europeo di Design (IED) in Italy where her final thesis was a project in partnership with Cabellini, one of the country's leading design and consultant firm. And, after two years studying and working in interior space design in Milan, Andrea came back earlier this year and immediately started the Redesign Studio Colombia. Nevertheless, Andrea's first inspirations for creating something new from something old started early on prior to university. It was during her senior year at Colegio Nueva Granada where she worked on a school project called 'old concentration' where old things like shoes, lamps, chairs and tables, were being reinvented and recreated. And since that initial inspirational experience, she continued the creative path that took her from Colombia to Italy and now back to Bogota where Redesign Studio was born. Below are some of Andrea's earlier work:

Not only I admire the reawaken concept that 'things do not have to be what they seem' and with passion, creativity and imagination, they can become so much more. I also love that each piece comes with its own story with more new ones being created. For example, when we first met Andrea at the Verano Suite event, pieces that stood out for us were an old suitcase from a family member where it has been transformed into a sofa seat. As well, an old briefcase handed down by a friend's grandfather is now a lovely corner table. Or a beautiful white coffee table made from a lifting crane. And with each creation, comes forth a tale that take you back to its origin. The recreation itself is highly respectful, simple and understated as to preserve the true beauty and authenticity of each item.

Another favourite piece is a vintage trunk that has been converted into a cocktail table with two movable seats. It is such a clever concept whereas it can be easily stowed back to its original shape without being too intrusive.

And I come to learn that it is one of Redesign Studio's unique traits where it is important to maintain a living or working space that is both enjoyable and functional at the same time. So as seen below, another functional piece is the dual purpose vanity chair with hidden drawers.

Besides working with vintage pieces, Andrea also experimented with different materials by infusing modern techniques to her designs. It is not just about recycling old materials but thinking outside the box and then recreating one of kind pieces that are both functional as well as being seen as an art form. For example, turning what used to be a bath tub into a modern arm chair or a simple glass top hovering as part of a coffee table but serving more as a blank canvas to legs that were made out of recycled magazines and books.

For a young Company, the world of Redesign Studio is vast and equipped with endless products creativity. Besides working with vintage or simply unconventional items, the Company also design lighting and home accessories that included highly crafted wooden masks that can be made to clients' own specifications. Uniqueness and discretion are important and if a client desires, products can be made on a 'one of a kind' basis.

Throughout this entire process, I have learned many things about a Company like Redesign Studio. One of the most important lessons is that we need to not just see things for what they are but more for where they came from and what they could become. In a world like today where excess is becoming purely a norm, we must step back with less and appreciating more. Todo comenzó cuando decidimos en el último minuto visitar un evento de Moda y Diseño patrocinado recientemente por Verano Suite aquí en Bogotá. Dado que estamos en Bogotá hace todavía muy poco, no sabíamos qué esperar de tal evento. Pero como en todas las ocasiones inesperadas, siempre nos encontramos con sorpresas encantadoras. Jóvenes y emergentes diseñadores de accesorios y moda estuvieron presentes para introducir sus colecciones con gran entusiasmo. Cada pieza era hermosa, única y llena de personalidad. Y mientras caminábamos tranquilamente admirando la variedad de coloridos artículos, una sección en particular, Redesign Studio Colombia, llamo nuestra atención pues se trataba de accesorios y piezas de mobiliario, retro, actuales e innovadores. La fundadora y diseñadora detrás de Redesign Studio, Andrea Mallarino, nos comentó brevemente acerca de su concepto de diseño y reelaboración de piezas antiguas para darles una nueva vida. Se trata de artículos que normalmente se desecharian o se pasarian por alto, pero que son recreados y funcionales sin perder la autenticidad de su belleza estética original. Después de hablar con Andrea, yo sabía que tenía que escribir una historia acerca de esta diseñadora emergente y muy talentosa. No sólo admiro el concepto de dar una nueva vida a objetos el el cual "las cosas no tienen que ser lo que parecen" y con la pasión, la creatividad y la imaginación, pueden llegar a ser mucho más. También me encanta que cada pieza viene con su propia historia y con muchas por venir. Por ejemplo, cuando conocimos a Andrea en el evento Verano Suite, una de las piezas que mas notamos fue una vieja maleta de un miembro de la familia, que fue transformada en un sofá. A su vez, un viejo maletín heredado por el abuelo de un amigo es ahora una preciosa mesa esquinera. O una hermosa mesa de centro blanca hecha de una estructura de madera. Así con cada creación, surge una historia que te llevará de vuelta a su origen. La recreación en sí es muy respetuosa, sencilla y discreta como para preservar la verdadera belleza y autenticidad de cada elemento.

Otra de mis favoritas es un tronco de época que ha sido convertido en una mesa de cóctel con dos asientos movibles. Es un concepto tan inteligente que se puede guardar fácilmente o volver a su forma original sin ser demasiado intrusivo.

Y yo he aprendido que uno de los rasgos únicos de Redesign Studio es mantener una vivienda o lugar de trabajo que sea tanto agradable como funcional. Así como se ve a continuación, otra pieza funcional este elemento doble propósito, pues es silla y tocador con cajones ocultos.

Además de trabajar con piezas vintage, Andrea también experimenta con diferentes materiales mediante la aplicacion de las técnicas modernas para sus diseños. No se trata solo de reciclar materiales antiguos, se trata de salirse del esquema y recrear piezas únicas que son tanto funcionales como una forma de arte. Por ejemplo, transformó lo que solía ser una tina de baño en una silla moderna de brazo o un cristal flotando en el marco de una mesa de café, pero que es un lienzo en blanco a patas que fueron hechas de revistas y libros que han sido reciclados.

Para ser una empresa joven, el mundo de Redesign Studio es amplio y está equipado con productos de creatividad infinita. Además de trabajar con elementos de época o simplemente no convencionales, la Compañía también diseña accesorios de iluminación y hogar que incluyen mascaras de madera altamente elaboradas que se pueden hacer bajo especificaciones de los clientes. Singularidad y discreción son importantes y si un cliente desea, los productos se pueden hacer sobre la base de una “pieza única”.

A lo largo de todo este proceso, he aprendido muchas cosas acerca de una empresa como Redesign Studio. Una de las lecciones más importantes es que debemos ver las cosas no solo por lo que son si no, de donde vienen y a su vez lo que podrían llegar a ser. En un mundo como el actual, donde el exceso se está convirtiendo en una mera norma, tenemos que detenernos y apreciar más con menos. Heaven on Earth in Santorini, Greece

It was one of those trips that I will never forget. We were living in London at the time and thought a few days in Santorini was in order since we have heard so much about the beautiful island. But words alone cannot describe how the most simplistic place can be so blissfully stunning at the same time. It was as if we have stepped into a world of pure charm and allurement that do not seem to exist anywhere else. It was an island unto itself surrounded by the deepest blue sea and the sky so clear you can see the ocean stretching out into the far distance.

The time was late August and we arrived at the Perivolas Hotel in Oia, Santorini, for a few days of sunshine and complete relaxation. Perivolas sits on top of the hill and amongst a stretch of glimmering white structures at the heart of Oia. Each room comes with private terrace and a breathtaking view of the sea and all its remarkable beauty. It was a very quiet oasis serving more as a blank canvas to the immense view that surrounds the hotel. And together with the spectacular location, the privacy and simple elegance of the suite, it was truly paradise in every sense of the word, not to mention the hotel's impressive infinity pool below.

Not very far from the hotel is an area called Amoudi Bay with outdoor restaurants serving fresh delicious seafood. This was where we had one of the longest, most delightful and romantic meals all the while mesmerized by the gorgeous blue sea.

At night after the sun has set, a brief stroll into the centre of Oia where along the way, you can pause and take in more of the fascinating beauty of the island itself. It has to be the most romantic place I have ever been to, in all of its pure and simple beauty. Here, as if time did stand still and the only thing you have to do is to enjoy the life you see before you, without any sense of being rush or feeling like you have to be somewhere else. It made you feel that it was your moment to relish without any worries in the world.

One of the things we highly recommend is to charter a private catamaran for a day of exploration around the island itself. With all of its glorious vast ocean space, an opportunity to travel around the island is a chance of a lifetime, something that you will remember and cherish forever. And as we were on our very own adventure of exploring, swimming and snorkeling off the coast of Santorini, these are some of the stunning views we came across.

Throughout all of our travels, it is quite rare when we come across a place that has such a personal impact on us. Oia, Santorini is what I call my "own heaven on earth" to go back to. It is not only about the surreal blue sea, opulent sky, lovely people and delicious food but there is something more simple and magical. It has a profound effect as if I am forever in a dreamlike state of mind, that the place is entirely random and far apart from anything we have come to know during our travels.

Estábamos viviendo en Londres para esa época y pensamos que unos pocos días en Santorini estaría bien, ya que hemos oído mucho acerca de la hermosa isla. Pero las palabras por sí solas no pueden describir cómo, un lugar tan sencillo, puede ser tan sorprendente al mismo tiempo. Era como si hubiéramos entrando en un mundo de encanto y seducción que parece no existir en otro lugar. Es una isla rodeada por el profundo mar azul y el cielo tan claro se puede ver el mar que se adentra en la distancia.

Fue a finales de agosto, llegamos al hotel Perivolas en Oia, Santorini, durante unos días de sol y relax. Perivolas se encuentra en la cima de la colina y entre un tramo de relucientes estructuras blancas en el centro de Oia. Todas las habitaciones cuentan con terraza privada y una vista impresionante del mar y toda su notable belleza. Es un oasis muy tranquilo que sirve como lienzo en blanco para la inmensa vista que rodea al hotel. Y junto con la ubicación espectacular, la privacidad y elegancia de la suite, es un paraíso en todos los sentidos de la palabra, por no hablar de la impresionante piscina infinita del hotel mostrada a continuación.

No muy lejos del hotel se encuentra una zona llamada Amoudi Bay con restaurantes al aire libre y deliciosos mariscos frescos. Fue aquí donde tuvimos una de las comidas más largas, encantadoras y románticas hipnotizados por el hermoso mar azul.

Por la noche después de que el sol se pone, un breve paseo por el centro de Oia, a lo largo del camino es ideal para hacer una pausa y disfrutar más de la fascinante belleza de la isla. Ha sido el lugar más romántico en el que he estado, con toda su belleza pura y simple. Aquí, es como si el tiempo se detuviera y lo único que debes hacer es disfrutar de la vida que tienes ante ti, sin ninguna sensación de prisa o necesidad de estar en otro lugar. Este lugar te hace sentir que es un momento para disfrutar sin ninguna clase de preocupación.

Una de las cosas que recomendamos es alquilar un catamarán privado para un día de exploración alrededor de la isla. Con todo este inmenso océano la posibilidad de viajar alrededor de la isla es una gran oportunidad, algo que recordaras y apreciaras por siempre. Y ya que estábamos en nuestra aventura de explorar, nadar y bucear en la costa de Santorini, estas son algunas de las impresionantes vistas que nos encontramos.

A lo largo de todos nuestros viajes, es muy raro cuando nos encontramos con un lugar que tiene un impacto tan particular en nosotros. Oia, Santorini es lo que yo llamo mi "propio cielo en la tierra" para regresar. No es sólo sobre el surrealista mar azul, el cielo opulento, la gente encantadora y la deliciosa comida, si no que hay algo más sencillo y mágico. Tiene un profundo efecto como si estuviera en un estado de ensueño para siempre, como si el lugar estuviera totalmente aleatorio y lejos de todo lo que hemos conocido en nuestros viajes.
